About Super Bowl 2012
This year’s Super Bowl is in its 46 year of the Super Bowl and the 42nd year of the Championship game in the modern era of the NFL. Super Bowl XLVI will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium on February 5, 2012. A multi-purpose sports stadium in Downtown Indianapolis, it celebrated its grand opening on August 24, 2008 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 18 2008. Replacing the aged RCA Dome as the home field for the Indianapolis Colts, the stadium was built to accommodate for the expansion of the Indiana Convention Center. The surface of the field is Field Turf and the elements of kinetic architecture will provide for quick conversion of the facility to accommodate a variety of events.
The retro look to the new stadium is a result of Indianapolis's liking towards the historic Fieldhouse appearance of sports venues from decades ago. Conseco Fieldhouse, Hinkle Fieldhouse, and the Pepsi Coliseum are other examples of large sports venues (both new and old) around the city with the same type of design.
