About the Buccaneers

The Detroit Lions began play way back in 1929, then as the Portsmouth Spartans. It wasn't until 1934 when radio executive George Richards bought the team that they moved to the Motor City. It was at the same time that the franchise was renamed the "Lions," a name chosen to pay homage to the Detroit Tigers. Under the guidance of Richards, the Detroit Lions quickly made their name in the city, giving fans an opportunity to get Lions Thanksgiving tickets in their first season in Detroit, a tradition that has continued to this day.

Prior to the Super Bowl era as we know it, the Detroit Lions were able to win four NFL championships. Their first came in 1935, only their second season in Detroit, under the leadership of quarterback Dutch Clark. The 1950's were a banner decade for the Detroit Lions, as they won three championships in 1952, 1953 and 1959.

While the Detroit Lions have not experienced as much success as they have hoped, fans were able to enjoy watching one of the all-time great players in Barry Sanders. Drafted as the third pick overall in the 1989 NFL Draft, Sanders became an instant star. In his 10 seasons in the league he made the Pro Bowl each year, was All-Pro every year and was the Co-MVP of the league in 1997. His rushed for a total of 15,269 yards and 109 touchdowns. Sanders was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.The NFL  found its way to Tampa, Florida, in 1976 when the league awarded an expansion franchise to the city. The expansion teams of the era had a difficult time building a successful roster that could win football games right away, and with no team was that more evident than with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During their first NFL season, the Bucs were unable to find the win column, losing each of their fourteen games. The second season was not much better, as they lost the first twelve games. The team's 0-26 start as a franchise is a record for the worst in NFL history.

The team's popularity began to grow among potential ticket buyers in 1996 when the franchise hired Tony Dungy as their head coach. His winning personality and defensive mindset changed the culture in Tampa. From 1996 through 2001, Dungy compiled a 54-42 record and helped take the Buccaneers from a last place franchise to one of the NFL's elite teams and one of the most sought-after tickets in the league.

Despite Dungy consistently bringing Tampa Bay to the NFL playoffs, he could never bring the team to the next level. After letting go of the popular coach, the team hired fiery head coach Jon Gruden to replace the even-tempered Dungy in 2002. That same year, with players like Warren Sapp, Keyshawn Johnson and Brad Johnson, coach Gruden helped to lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to their first championship in Super Bowl XXXVII.
