About the Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles franchise was founded in 1933 as a replacement team for the bankrupt Frankford Yellow Jackets of the NFL. The team's first several football seasons resulted in losing records, but in 1944, the Eagles turned around their luck, winning or tying nine games while only losing once. Over the next few seasons, their team continued to improve and ended up with back-to-back league championships in 1948 and 1949. They added a third league championship in 1960, but since the Super Bowl era began, the Eagles have continued to strive for their first Lombardi Trophy.
Undoubtedly, Donovan McNabb has become the face of the Eagles franchise in recent years with his combination of athleticism and throwing ability, but it was Randall Cunningham that revolutionized the quarterback position in the NFL. Playing the majority of his career in Philadelphia, Cunningham is known for his ability with his legs even more than his arm. During his tenure as Eagles quarterback, he was selected to the NFL Pro Bowl three times and won the Pro Football Writers Association Most Valuable Player Award in 1990.
Despite not winning a Super Bowl during his time as head coach, Andy Reid has been at the controls for one of the most successful eras in team history. With quarterback Donovan McNabb being the constant driving force on the roster, the team has made the NFC Conference Championship five times between 2001 and 2008. In 2004, the Eagles played on the biggest stage, qualifying for the Super Bowl where they would eventually lose to the New England Patriots.
The Eagles play in the NFC Eastern Division, competing annually with rivals Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins and New York Giants. The team's football schedule is littered with tough match-ups, and games against their NFC East rivals only take six games on the schedule. In addition to quarterback Donovan McNabb and head coach Andy Reid, the Eagles will need contributions on the field from running back Brian Westbrook, wide receivers Hank Baskett and rookie Jeremy Maclin, as well as cornerback Asante Samuel, if they hope to contend for the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl title.
