About the Concacaf Gold Cup and Soccer

The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF). CONCACAF was founded in its current form on 18 September 1961 in Mexico City, Mexico by the fusion of the NAFC and the CCCF, and it became one of the six continental confederations affiliated with FIFA. Its primary administrative functions are to organize competitions for national teams and clubs, and to conduct World Cup qualifying tournaments. In recent years, men's football in the region has been dominated by the United States and Mexico, who have won all but one of the editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The game of soccer is widely considered the most popular sport in the world. While taking a back seat to football, basketball and baseball in the United States, the game of soccer is a cultural phenomenon in almost every other country. Nowhere is that more evident than Europe, where the best players in the world play their professional career. Teams like the Manchester United, FC Barcelona, AC Milan and Liverpool FC are full with top level talent filling the rosters and die-hard fans filling the stands for every game.

The pinnacle event in soccer is the World Cup, an event that only occurs every four years. Countries including Brazil, Spain, Italy and France are always among the top teams in the international tournament. The U.S. Men's National Team has improved tremendously over the past 10 years, and will continue to improve over the next 10. The next World Cup will take place in South Africa in 2010, and hundreds of thousands of fans will descend on the country for the event.
