About the Bears
The team history of the Chicago Bears dates back to 1920, when George Halas founded the professional football franchise. Over the first 30 years in the National Football League, the Bears went on to win seven NFL Championships. Despite a rich team history, it's the 1985 Bears team that everyone who loves the game of football remembers. Head coach Mike Ditka, along with linebacker Mike Singletary, quarterback Jim McMahon, defensive tackle William "Refrigerator" Perry and running back Walter Payton, helped create one of the most dominant football teams in NFL history. During the regular season, the 1985 Bears went 15-1 and cruised into the Super Bowl. Matched up against the AFC champion New England Patriots, the Bears dominated the football game and captured their first Super Bowl win.
Since the Super Bowl win, the Bears have only been able to make it back to the big game once, in a 2006 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Head coach Lovie Smith has added stability to the NFL franchise since his hire in 2004, and now he has what he hopes is more stability at the all-important quarterback position. The team's front office made a trade with the Denver Broncos to acquire young Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler. In previous football seasons, the Bears have been plagued with the inconsistent quarterback play of Rex Grossman, but in Jay Cutler's brief career he has thrown for more than 20 touchdowns in two consecutive seasons.
As with Bears teams of the past, the present squad also relies heavily on a tough defense. For the past 10 years, linebacker Brian Urlacher has been the man to lead the defense. Wearing the number 54, Urlacher has patrolled the middle linebacker position as well as anyone in the National Football League. As of 2008, he has been a 6-time Pro Bowl selection and won the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2005. He does not do it alone though, as defensive tackle Tommie Harris and linebacker Lance Briggs provide additional help on the defensive side of the football.
The Bears play their home NFL games at the historic Soldier Field and are in high demand. Get your Chicago Bears Football tickets today!
