About the Sacramento Kings

For the Sacramento Kings franchise, everything began nearly 3,000 miles away in Rochester, New York, in 1945 as part of the National Basketball League. Then known as the Rochester Royals, the Kings made their way through multiple cities, names and leagues before finding their way to Sacramento. The team joined the National Basketball Association in 1948, winning the NBA Championship only a few years later in 1951. From there, the Royals moved further south, down to Cincinnati, where they resided for the next fifteen years. But in 1972, after nearly 30 years of being known as the Royals, the team moved again, this time to Kansas City, and from that point forward their fans would be buying Kings tickets to see their team play.

From 1972 through 1985, the Kings played in the Kansas City area for the majority of their home games, splitting time with Omaha until 1975 and after Kings ticket sales slowed they abandoned the market. The city of Kansas City also proved to be unable to handle a NBA franchise when in its final season in the city ticket sales plummeted, seeing less than 7,000 fans per game. So with poor attendance, ownership decided to take the team west to the capital of California and become the Sacramento Kings.

Over the long history of the Sacramento Kings, no matter which city they were in, there were great players who put on the uniform. In Cincinnati, there was the all time great point guard Oscar Robertson who is still the only player in NBA history to average a triple-double for an entire season. In Kansas City, they were home to Hall of Fame player Nate Archibald, who was an All-NBA First Team member three times with the Kings. From 1998 through 2005, some of the most successful seasons in team history, fans with Sacramento Kings tickets got to see Chris Webber lead the team.
