From the beginning, the Phoenix Suns showed they were in the NBA for a reason and that reason was to win. Like many expansion teams before them, the Phoenix Suns struggled their way through their first season, finishing with a record of 16-66. But over the following years the Phoenix Suns would start to improve their roster, and only three short years later the team finished with a record of 49-33. In 1976, the Phoenix Suns surprised everyone when in the playoffs they defeated the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors to advance to the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. Although the Phoenix Suns would fall in the series, they would go down in history as having played in arguably the greatest game ever in Game 5 of that series. Down by 2 with one second remaining on the clock in double overtime, Phoenix Suns forward Gar Heard fired a high arching jump shot at the buzzer to send the game into a third overtime. Prior to the shot, fans at the Boston Garden stormed the court thinking their team had won and had to be ushered off the court. Everyone who had Boston Celtics vs. Phoenix Suns tickets that night were given a show that may never be seen again.
Over nearly the next two decades, the Phoenix Suns and their fans saw many great teams and great players. But it was in 1993 that superstar power forward Charles Barkley was acquired and quickly made Phoenix Suns tickets the hottest ticket in town. Barkley would go on to have one of the all-time great seasons that year, leading the Phoenix Suns to a record of 62-20 and his first MVP award. The Phoenix Suns charged through the NBA Playoffs and reached the NBA Finals for only the second time in franchise history. Unfortunately, Barkley was not enough to push the Phoenix Suns over the top, as they lost the series to the Chicago Bulls in six games.
