About the Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves were not the first team to call the Twin Cities home, as the Minneapolis Lakers resided there up until 1960. The Lakers left for Los Angeles in 1960, and it took 29 years before fans in Minnesota could purchase basketball tickets again to root on the home team. In 1989, the Minnesota Timberwolves were one of four expansion teams that joined the National Basketball Association. The popularity of the Timberwolves soared in their opening season when, despite finishing with a record of 22-60, they saw more than 1 million fans buy Minnesota Timberwolves tickets. Team success didn't immediately follow for Minnesota, as they lost 366 combined games in their first six seasons. But in 1995, the Timberwolves got the franchise player they were looking for.

With the fifth pick in the 1995 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves selected 7-foot forward Kevin Garnett. While high school players going straight to the NBA became the norm ten years later, Garnett was the first player in twenty years to do so at the time. No one knew quite what to expect from him, except they knew he had immense talent on the basketball court. Over his first couple seasons, Kevin Garnett slowly started to improve his play and his leadership abilities up until 1997, when he led the Minnesota Timberwolves to their first playoff appearance in franchise history.

Over his 12 seasons in Minnesota, Kevin Garnett posted huge numbers as well as a long list of accomplishments. He led the Timberwolves to eight postseason appearances, including a trip to the Western Conference finals in 2004. That same season, he was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player as well as being on the NBA All First Team and All Defensive First Team. Despite being traded to the Boston Celtics in 2007, he is still a beloved figure in Minnesota, something that will not change any time soon.

Now the team is led by young forward Kevin Love, a player who continues to improve every year. Low and the rest of the Minnesota Timberwolves roster look to find their way back to the playoffs.
