About the Astros

The Houston Astros baseball club played its first game on April 10, 1962. Then known as the Houston Colt .45s, the team defeated the Chicago Cubs 11-2, winning their first game. In 1965, the team officially changed its name to the "Astros," moved into the Astrodome and became the first Major League Baseball team to play at an indoor stadium. Fans who bought Houston Astros tickets were able to enjoy baseball inside and away from the Texas heat.

The Astros struggled to win through the first decade and a half of their history, finishing over .500 only three times from 1962 to 1979. But following the 1979 season the Houston Astros bolstered their already strong pitching staff by signing flame throwing pitcher Nolan Ryan. His addition immediately paid dividends for the team, helping them qualify for the playoffs for the next two consecutive years. It was as a member of the Houston Astros that Ryan was able to tie or break multiple records. He broke the record for most no-hitters thrown, became only the third pitcher to throw no-hitters in both leagues and broke the all-time strikeout record. He had his #34 retired by the Houston Astros in 1996.

The 1990's ushered in a new era for the Houston Astros as they welcomed in the "Killer B's," Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell. The two would go on to incredible success, playing their entire careers as members of the team. Biggio played 20 years for the Houston Astros and accumulated more than 3000 hits, 668 doubles (5th place all time) and is the only player in MLB history to have 3000 hits, 600 doubles, 400 stolen bases, and 250 home runs. Bagwell is widely considered the greatest Houston Astros player ever. Winning the Most Valuable Player Award in 1994, he finished as the Houston Astros career leader in home runs, RBIs, walks, sacrifice flies and intentional walks.
