About the Rays

The history of the Tampa Bay Rays has been a short one. The franchise played their first game in 1998 in front of a sold out crowd at Tropicana Field. They lost that first game versus the Detroit Tigers 11-6, but it marked the beginning of the franchise that was originally known as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. As the team looks to continue competing in the American League East, get your Tampa Bay Rays tickets as they take on the likes of the Red Sox, Yankees and the rest of Major League Baseball.

In 1995, owners from Major League Baseball unanimously decided to make Tampa Bay and Arizona the new homes of baseball's 13th and 14th expansion teams. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays were placed in the American League East, one of the toughest divisions in baseball. Since their inception, the team has played their home games at Tropicana Field, which was originally known as the Thunderdome. Prior to taking the field, the Tampa Bay Rays along with the city of St. Petersburg, Florida, agreed on a $63 million renovation to update Tropicana Field. When they were putting together their roster, the team wanted to have veteran players to compliment the young players on the team. They added players like Fred McGriff and Wade Boggs to add leadership to the young franchise.

Over the years of the franchise's existence, the Tampa Bay Rays did not experience the success that they envisioned. From 1998 though 2007, the Rays failed to ever see a winning season, but in 2008 that all changed. Behind Manager of the Year Joe Maddon and a solid group of young pitchers and position players, the Tampa Bay Rays were able to win 97 games and capture the AL East title. They entered the postseason that year as a good story, but shocked everyone when they made it all the way to the World Series. There have not been tougher tickets to get in Tampa than World Series Tampa Bay Rays tickets in 2008.
