The Stone Temple Pilots were essentially formed because of a girl. Lead singer Scott Weiland met bass player Robert DeLeo at a concert in Long Beach, CA, and they connected over the fact that they had dated the same woman. They decided to start their own band named Mighty Joe Young with additions of drummer Eric Kretz and Robert DeLeo's brother Dean on guitar. After discovering the name Mighty Joe Young was being used, they adopted the name Stereo Temple Pirates before officially changing it to Stone Temple Pilots. They immediately entered the studio and began recording their debut album.
